Australian Economic Update
James Shugg from Westpac will give an update on the outlook for the Australian economy focussing on the topicial issues of the day.
- He will explain why policy makers in Australia are managing a boom whereas other western economies are still struggling to avoid more gloom;
- He will show how Australia's budget position compares to those countries that are perceived by markets to be serious investment risks;
- He will reveal what Australia's two great vulnerabilities are, that could yet throw the economy off the rails.
His presentation will conclude with the usual forecasts for interest rates and exchange rates, with plenty of opportunity for questions.
Speaker: James Shugg, Director, Economics, Westpac Banking Corporation James Shugg was born and educated in Tasmania. In 1986 he joined ANZ, working in their Economics Department for eight years. He spent several years in the London office and also completed a secondment to the Business Council of Australia during that time.
In 1995 James joined Westpac. He has been working in the London office as the Bank’s economist for the past fourteen years. His responsibilities include advising Westpac’s European and US clients on economic and political developments in Australia and New Zealand, and monitoring and forecasting developments in the major northern hemisphere economies. Although based in London, James spends several months of the year working in Westpac’s head office in Sydney, and he has nurtured a wide range of contacts in the local banking, business and government sectors.
James was a Board member of the Australia and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce UK and its subsequent merged entity Australian Business from 2002 to 2005. He is also a London-based financial markets reporter for ABC Radio – Australia’s national broadcaster – a role he has held since 2000.
